Chapter 14

‘Yes, sir. I know progress is slow but we are we are making headway. We might have a possible name for the suspect … No, sir, we haven’t found him yet … Yes, sir, as soon as we have any more information I’ll let you know straightaway.’ The Superintendent was really starting to get up Marlowe’s nose

He eased back in his chair and put the telephone handset down none too gently. He then picked up the updated file on the murder investigations, flipped through it, opened his office door and walked into the squad room.

Most of the team were already out and about on their assigned duties. The exceptions were Dave Gowan and Tanya Etherington who were sitting around Tanya’s desk in deep conversation, discussing the Watts case.

‘Dave, I know you’re still tied up with the stabbing, but Uniform have brought in the Brothers Grimm. I need you to sit in on the interviews with me.’

‘No problem,’ the DI replied. ‘Which interview room?’

‘Gary is in number one and we have Pete in number three. We’ll have a word with Gary first and leave Pete stewing for a while.’

Dave stood up and ran his hands down his wrinkled suit, trying to brush away the creases.

‘You look knackered.’

‘No more than usual, Boss.’

‘Grab some coffees and we’ll have a word with Gary. Better get one for our guest.’

The red light was on above the door of the interview room to show it was occupied. Dave opened the door and Marlowe prepared himself with a big false grin on his face and walked in.

A uniformed officer was sitting on a chair in the corner nearest the door. He stood and left the room as the DCI gave him the nod. Marlowe wondered how long it would be before the room lost its Shag Pile Charlie smell. Gary Barnes sat at the far side of the Formica topped table and looked up as the two detectives entered the room.

‘Morning, Gary. This is DI Gowan. I'm led to believe you’ve already met.’ Marlowe pushed a plastic cup of coffee towards their guest.

‘Cheers, Mr Marlowe.’ Barnes nodded his acknowledgement to the DI. Gary Barnes had indeed crossed swords with the DI on several occasions in the past.

‘This is a formal interview, Gary,’ said the DCI. ‘As you’ll be aware, we are investigating the deaths of two drug dealers we believe are known to you. We will be taping the conversation and the video will be running. If you want to wait until your brief gets here, that’s ok, it’s up to you.’

Marlowe watched closely for a reaction. None came. ‘No, that’s ok, Mr Marlowe, I’ve nothing to hide.’

Bad sign not wanting his solicitor, thought Marlowe.

‘You know the drill, Gary. At this time you’re not under arrest and are merely helping us with our enquiries. You are free to go at any time,’ Marlowe looked up from the folder he was pretending to read. A different approach was needed with Gary Barnes. He wasn’t as gullible as his brother.
